They are practical tools that tell you, before you buy, how a fabric will perform, how long it will last, and whether the price you’re paying reflects genuine quality or just good marketing.
The problem is that almost no one explains what these numbers mean in plain language — or why they should change the way you shop.

It is, in many ways, the most immediately useful fabric specification for a non-specialist buyer because it’s a direct proxy for substance. Heavier fabric, within the same fibre type, generally means more material, denser weave, and better durability. Lighter fabric means less.
This doesn’t mean higher GSM is always better — different garment types require different weights. But understanding the right GSM range for what you’re buying tells you immediately whether a fabric is appropriate for its purpose or whether it’s been made too thin to save on material cost.
Practical GSM ranges for common Indian clothing:
- Lightweight summer fabrics (voile, lawn, thin cotton): 80–120 GSM. Appropriate for sheer layers, dupatta fabrics, and very fine summer pieces. At this range, the fabric should not be used as a primary standalone garment — it will be see-through and fragile.
- Everyday cotton and linen (kurtas, shirts, casual wear): 130–180 GSM. This is the functional range for daily wear in Indian climates. Fabric in this range breathes well, holds its shape, and survives regular washing. Below 130 GSM in a cotton or linen everyday garment is a quality concern.
- Mid-weight fabric (structured trousers, blazers, co-ords): 180–250 GSM. Pieces that need to hold a silhouette — trousers, blazers, structured kurtas — should be in this range. The fabric has enough body to maintain shape without being heavy or uncomfortable.
- Heavy fabric (winter wear, structured outerwear): 250–350 GSM and above. For jackets, heavy cotton layers, and winter pieces. Below this range in a garment marketed as winter wear is a quality concern.
How to use GSM when shopping:
Quality brands and fabric suppliers will often list GSM. If it isn’t listed, you can estimate by feel — heavier fabric of the same type is almost always better quality. A kurta fabric that feels slightly substantial is likely in a better GSM range than one that feels thin or papery in your hands.
If a brand doesn’t list fabric specifications at all, that’s a signal worth noting.
Thread Count: What It Actually Means and Where It’s Misleading
Thread count is the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric — both horizontal (weft) and vertical (warp) threads combined.
It became widely known as a quality indicator in bedding — high thread count sheets were marketed as premium, and the association stuck. The problem is that thread count in clothing is both less straightforward and more commonly manipulated than the bedding industry made it seem.
What thread count actually indicates:
In woven fabrics — cotton, linen, cotton blends — thread count reflects how densely the fabric is woven. A higher thread count in the same fibre type generally means a finer, smoother, more tightly constructed fabric. For a cotton shirt or a cotton kurta, a higher thread count typically translates to a softer hand feel and a finer appearance.
Where thread count becomes misleading:
- Multi-ply manipulation. Some manufacturers achieve high thread counts by twisting two or three thinner threads together and counting each strand individually. A fabric listed as 600 thread count using two-ply threads is not better than a 300 thread count single-ply fabric — they’re essentially the same density. The number has been inflated without the quality to back it up.
- The diminishing returns problem. Beyond a certain point, higher thread count doesn’t improve a fabric. Very high thread counts — 800, 1000+ — often require thinner, lower-quality fibres to achieve the density, which can actually reduce durability. A well-constructed 200 thread count fabric in long-staple cotton will outlast and outperform a 600 thread count fabric in short-staple cotton.
- Thread count only applies to woven fabrics. It’s meaningless for knit fabrics, synthetic blends, and most non-woven textiles. Applying thread count logic to these categories is a category error.

For woven cotton fabrics, a thread count between 180 and 300 in single-ply construction is a good quality indicator for everyday wear. Above 300, verify whether it’s single-ply. Below 150 in a fabric claiming to be premium quality is a red flag.
Fibre Length and Staple Quality: The Specification Nobody Talks About
Thread count and GSM measure the constructed fabric. Fibre length — the staple length of the raw fibre used — measures the quality of the raw material itself. It’s the specification that separates genuinely premium fabric from fabric that merely performs well on the more visible metrics.
What staple length means:
Cotton, the most common fabric in Indian clothing, is made from fibres of varying lengths. Long-staple cotton — fibres 28mm and above — produces a finer, stronger, smoother yarn than short-staple cotton. The longer the fibre, the fewer ends are exposed in the yarn, which means less pilling, better strength, and a smoother surface.
The most well-known long-staple varieties are Egyptian cotton, Pima cotton, and Supima cotton. In the Indian context, Giza cotton and certain varieties of Indian Shankar cotton are long-staple and considered premium.
Short-staple cotton — the majority of commodity cotton — produces yarn with more exposed fibre ends, which leads to faster pilling, rougher texture, and lower durability.
Why this matters in practice:
Two kurtas with identical GSM and identical thread counts can perform entirely differently if one is made from long-staple cotton and one from short-staple. The long-staple fabric will be smoother, pill less, hold colour better, and last longer. The difference is invisible on a specification sheet unless fibre type is explicitly mentioned.
What to look for:
When a brand mentions the specific cotton variety — Pima, Egyptian, Giza, or a named Indian variety — that’s a positive quality signal. It means the brand knows what’s in their fabric and is confident enough to tell you. Generic “100% cotton” labelling without further specification tells you the fibre type but nothing about its quality.
Weave Type: How Construction Affects Performance
Beyond the raw numbers, the way a fabric is woven significantly affects how it looks, feels, and wears. The three most common weave types in Indian clothing each have distinct performance profiles:
Plain weave: The simplest construction — threads interlace in an over-under pattern. Produces a flat, even fabric. Cotton voile, muslin, and most basic cotton fabrics use plain weave. It’s breathable and lightweight but less durable than more complex weaves at the same GSM, because each thread bears more stress individually.
Twill weave: Threads pass over two or more threads at a time in a diagonal pattern. Denim, gabardine, and many structured trouser fabrics use twill weave. It produces a stronger, more durable fabric with better drape and a slight diagonal texture. Twill weave fabrics at the same GSM as plain weave will generally be more durable.
Satin weave: Threads pass over several others before interlacing, producing a smooth, lustrous surface. Used in silk-finish fabrics and some premium cotton fabrics. No single specification tells you everything about a fabric. The most useful approach is to read them together:
- GSM tells you if there’s enough substance for the garment’s purpose
- Thread count tells you about the density and fineness of the weave
- Fibre length tells you about the raw material quality
- Weave type tells you about the construction and performance characteristics
A fabric that scores well across all four is genuinely premium. A fabric that scores well on one but poorly on others is either marketed beyond its actual quality or optimised for appearance over durability.
When a brand is transparent about these specifications — when they tell you the GSM of their linen, the cotton variety in their kurtas, or the weave construction in their trousers — that transparency is itself a quality signal. Brands that know what’s in their fabric are proud of it.
